Debit Card Management FAQ

What is the Debit Card Management tool for my debit cards?
Debit Card Management allows you to limit how and where your debit cards can be used. You’ll have greater control over your card transactions, reducing the risk of fraudulent account activity by making it easier and faster to block a debit card wherever you are in minutes.

Who can use Debit Card Management?
All Kindred Credit Union members who have a personal account with online banking access and a debit card can use Debit Card Management. This feature is not yet available for Business accounts.

How does Debit Card Management work?
You can lock or unlock your personal debit cards from all transactions and activity, or block or unblock specific types of transactions. You can do this on one card, or on all of your cards!

  • Lock or unlock your personal debit card
  • Block or unblock your debit card for point-of-sale purchases and refunds
  • Block or unblock your debit card for ATM transactions
  • Block or unblock your debit card for international transactions
  • Block or unblock your debit card for Flash/tap transactions

How do I use Debit Card Management?
You can use this service in several ways:

  • Mobile App: in our Kindred Credit Union mobile app, click on the “Card Management” tile, then “Debit Card Management” to get started
  • Desktop online banking: Click on “Account Services”, then “Debit Card Management” to get started
  • In branch/by phone: a Kindred team member can help you use this new service in person or by calling our Member Contact Centre at 1.888.672.6728

How do I know which card is which to lock or block?
The first thing we suggest to anyone – even if they decide not to block any card transactions – is to go in and name their debit cards. You might need to have your card physically in front of you the first time, especially if you have multiple cards or joint accounts. Once your cards are nicknamed (“John - debit card,” “Debby debit 01”), you can easily determine which cards you want to lock or block.

What does “Block ATM transactions” mean?
This block feature means you cannot use ATM features with your debit card. You will not be able to take out money or deposit money. You will still be able to visit any ATM and view your balance, however.

What does “Block all purchases and refunds” mean?
This block feature means you cannot use this debit card for any point-of-sale purchases or refunds; in store or online. To use this card again, you will have to unblock the feature.

What does “Block all international transactions” mean?
This feature means that your debit card cannot be used outside of Canada.

I locked my card – does this mean I’ll get a new one?
No. Just because a card is locked does not mean you will get a new card. Locking your card simply limits the functionality of a debit card until you unlock it.

Is this feature for lost or stolen cards?
Not necessarily. Using the Debit Card Management feature is a pre-emptive measure to protect your finances against fraudulent transactions. If you suspect your debit card has been lost or stolen, it is important to lock your debit card immediately, then contact a Kindred team member at your earliest convenience for further assistance.
