Kindred CEO Receives Sustainability Recognition

Gary Gillam Award for corporate social responsibility

Kitchener, ON – Kindred Credit Union (Kindred) is pleased to announce that Brent Zorgdrager, chief executive officer, received the 2018 Gary Gillam Award on May 3 at the Central 1 Annual General Meeting held at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto.

Each year, the Gary Gillam Award honours sustainability leaders, one staff person and one volunteer, from the Ontario and British Columbia credit union sector. Recipients demonstrate exemplary achievements in the promotion of social responsibility and sustainability within the credit union sector, and the promotion of credit unions as socially responsible investment alternatives.

“Brent has been an exemplary social responsibility leader, pushing Kindred to further embed and live out our values,” states Susan Taves, board chair. “Under his leadership, Brent has influenced other credit unions to join the living wage movement and advocated for cooperative financial institutions to be more intentional about their social purpose."

Further, Brent championed Kindred’s partnership with Oikocredit Canada to implement Ontario's first retail investment product focused on microfinance, and he led Kindred to establish Canada's first complete line of socially responsible GICs. Kindred is recognized as a sustainability leader by both B Corp, as one of the "Best for the World", and as a member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values.

Brent has chosen to direct the $2,500 Gary Gillam Award donation to Shalom Counselling Services of Waterloo, Ontario in celebration of their 35th anniversary. The donation will support Shalom’s Counselling Care Fund to subsidize counselling services for those in need, and the gift will be matched through an affiliated program. Shalom is committed to providing accessible and affordable counselling services with a focus on helping people grow toward peace and wholeness. This mission aligns closely with Kindred’s purpose to inspire peaceful, just, and prosperous communities.

“We were thrilled to hear that Brent will be directing his Gary Gillam Award donation to Shalom,” noted Susan Schwartzentruber, clinical director. “This gift will bring us closer to our Counselling Care Fund goal and will support our ongoing work to serve the mental and emotional health needs of people in our communities.”
