Kindred is Committed to Member Privacy

December 5, 2018: UPDATE — Statistics Canada has announced that it will suspend its pilot project for obtaining personal financial information from financial institutions after concerns were raised over the privacy implications of collecting this data.

November 15, 2018 — On November 8 during an appearance in front of the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce, Canada's Chief statistician announced that the agency is putting its financial data collection project on hold until privacy concerns raised by Canadians are settled.

Since Statistics Canada is putting this policy on hold, our national trade association, the Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA), expects the agency will integrate feedback from all parties, including credit unions, for any future request of this nature.

CCUA will continue to monitor the situation and is in discussion with Statistics Canada to assess the potential of any unintended consequences this data collection project could have on credit unions. Kindred will keep our members updated on this issue.

November 1, 2018 — Kindred staff have been fielding a number of member inquiries regarding a new Statistics Canada initiative. The media has reported that Statistics Canada plans to collect “individual-level financial transactions data” and sensitive information, such as social insurance numbers, from selected Canadian financial institutions to develop a “new institutional personal information bank”.

Please rest assured that Kindred Credit Union has not been asked to provide member information to Statistics Canada. In fact, our national trade association, the Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA), has not heard of any member credit unions that have been approached by Statistics Canada in connection with such a data request.

As a member-owned financial cooperative, Kindred is committed to protecting your privacy and your personal and financial information. There is nothing more important in our business than safeguarding our members’ privacy.

Kindred and CCUA are monitoring this issue and we will provide updates should additional information become available. If you have any additional questions, please visit your local branch and speak with a member of our team.
